Computing Intent

At Knowsley Junior School, our computing curriculum aims to equip all pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to thrive in a rapidly changing digital world. Through the use of the updated Purple Mash scheme, pupils develop as confident, responsible and creative users of technology. Our curriculum fosters problem-solving, logical thinking and resilience while nurturing curiosity about how technology works.

We ensure pupils understand the principles of computer science, can apply computational thinking to solve problems, and become digitally literate citizens who use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly — both in school and beyond.

Implementation: Computing Skills and Knowledge

Computing is taught weekly in our well-resourced computer suite, ensuring every pupil has hands-on access to technology. The Purple Mash scheme provides a structured and progressive framework that builds skills across coding, data handling, communication, digital design and online safety from Year 3 to Year 6.

Teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring challenge and support where appropriate. Online safety is a continuous thread across the curriculum and is reinforced through assemblies, SMSC lessons and annual participation in Safer Internet Day.

Regular staff collaboration ensures consistency and progression across year groups, while computing is increasingly linked to other subjects to enhance cross-curricular learning and digital creativity.

NB: The computing scheme is being updated termly due to Purple Mash updating and improving their computing scheme.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at Knowsley Junior School are confident, competent and responsible digital citizens. They can design and debug programs, use technology purposefully to collect, analyse and present information, and understand how to stay safe online.

Progress is monitored through termly assessment using computing knowledge and skills grids, supported by teacher observations and pupil outcomes on Purple Mash. This ensures teachers can identify and address gaps promptly.
Consistent monitoring and moderation by the computing lead help to maintain high standards and ensure that computing is an engaging, relevant and forward-looking subject across the school.

As a result, pupils leave Knowsley ready to embrace the next stage of their education as confident, digitally literate learners, equipped for life in a modern, technological society.
