Physical Education Intent
At our school, every child receives two PE lessons per week.
Children will learn a variety of skills across a range of sports. This includes skills in gymnastics, dance, invasion games, net and wall games, swimming and outdoor and adventurous activities.
We offer swimming sessions to our Year 4 children.
The attachment below indicates the different units that your child will be covering across the year.
At Knowsley Junior School, our aim in PE is to ensure that all children develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to move their bodies safely, effectively and creatively. We want pupils to enjoy being active, to understand the importance of health and fitness, and to build the fundamental movement skills that support lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.
Through our PE curriculum, based on the GetSet4PE scheme, we aim for children to:
-
Develop competence across a broad range of physical activities.
-
Engage in sustained physical activity and understand its benefits.
-
Build character, resilience and teamwork through competitive and cooperative experiences.
-
Develop leadership skills, confidence and respect for others through sport.
We also ensure that our Sport Premium budget is used effectively to improve provision, equipment, and opportunities for all pupils, including those from disadvantaged groups.
Implementation: PE Skills and Knowledge
The PE Coordinator works closely with all staff to ensure high-quality provision across the school.
-
Curriculum sequencing: We use the GetSet4PE scheme to ensure lessons are progressive and build upon previous knowledge and skills. Units are carefully mapped across the key stages to cover all areas of the National Curriculum and to support skill progression.
-
Assessment: Foundation assessment sheets are used to identify both children who are exceeding expectations and those requiring further support. Data is analysed termly to inform planning and identify focus groups.
-
Enrichment: Exceeding pupils are offered additional opportunities through extended schools provision and community partnerships. Children who are less active are identified through participation tracking, Sports Leaders using pupil voice to design inclusive activities.
-
Targeted inclusion: Pupil Premium, EAL, SEND and vulnerable pupils are proactively encouraged and supported to participate in extracurricular opportunities.
-
Competitive sport: We take part in the DLP inter school competitions that are on offer for the year. We also attend some competitions outside of the DLP.
