Swimming and Water Safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

(As taken from the Department for Education statutory guidance)

Swimming takes place at the Saddleworth Pool and Leisure Centre with children in year 4, receiving swimming lessons on a Wednesday morning in the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms.  All children receive a 30 minute swimming lesson each week and are supported by the swimming instructor, teaching assistants and class teacher. It is essential therefore that each child has their swimming kit with them in school, along with any relevant medication or inhalers when it is thier turn to swim.

By the time a child reaches the end of Year 4, it is our aim that they have achieved the national green badge standard (swimming 25 metres).
