How can we rediscover the wonders of Ancient Egypt?

This term, Year 5 travel back in time to study Ancient Egypt and Early Civilisations, looking closely at why early societies settled along rivers like the Nile and how they compared with Stone Age Britain. In history, the children investigate what mummification reveals about afterlife beliefs, explore the significance of hieroglyphics and the Rosetta Stone, and debate the ethics surrounding Howard Carter’s excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb. A visit to the Manchester Museum helps bring this ancient world to life, giving them the chance to see authentic artefacts up close. These historical discoveries feed directly into their English, where the children produce explanations of the River Nile, biographies of Tutankhamun, reflective diary entries, and creative retellings of the Egyptian Cinderella story. Alongside their classroom studies, the children head off on their residential visit to Robinwood, taking part in outdoor challenges designed to build independence, resilience, and teamwork.

Spring Term Home Learning Challenges

At Knowsley Junior School, we know that children achieve their best when home and school work together. This year, we have developed our approach to home learning, informed by research from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).

Our home learning activities are designed to be purposeful, manageable and enjoyable, reinforcing classroom learning, encouraging regular reading and helping children practise key skills. We encourage children to complete activities little and often, developing their confidence, independence and positive learning habits.

Please encourage your child to take part and use their school planner to record, share and celebrate their learning at home.

Learning happens everywhere. By working together, we can help our children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive.
