Music Overview

Music is learnt and enjoyed in all classes, in whole school singing assemblies and a musical, Christmas production by each year group in December.

The Charanga music scheme is also used from Year 3 to Year 6. This is a modern, exciting music scheme, with many of the resources online and interactive. For more information, please follow the link.

Implementation

  • Oldham Music Centre visits the school on a weekly basis offering violin, woodwind and brass lessons to those who request, with some Pupil Premium children supported financially by the school. Every child in year 5 has whole class ukulele tuition for a term and keen and talented year 6 children continue this with a weekly session for a small group. School orchestra meet every Thursday. Singing Club meets every Tuesday after school.

  • Live performances are vital. Each year group performs a musical play at Christmas, the whole school visits the theatre to see the pantomime, musicians perform in special assemblies at Christmas and throughout the year. A spring concert is produced for the parents and community and performances at other venues occur as appropriate such as assemblies at Springhead Infants and a visit to the Oldham School’s Music Festival.

  • Teachers follow the scheme provided by Charanga which ensures children learn all aspects of the required curriculum and supports teacher professional development.

Music, art and DT assessments are produced termly (including names of exceeding and not meeting children) by each teacher to inform progress and planning. Data is analysed by the subject leader to ensure progress and coverage for all.

Impact

We follow the Model Music Curriculum provided by Charanga. Children demonstrate their ability in music in a variety of different ways and teachers will assess children’s work by making informal judgments during lessons. On the completion of a piece of work or performance, the teacher assesses the work and uses this information to plan for future learning. Verbal feedback is given to the child to help guide his or her progress and children are also encouraged to self-assess their learning and make judgments about how they can move their learning forward. Recordings using year group ipads are sometimes made and used to reflect upon learning.

The knowledge, skills and understanding in the programmes of study identify the aspects of music, art and DT in which pupils make progress:

Music: Performing, composing and appraising.

Art: Drawing, painting, printing, collage, work of artists, 3D design, textiles, digital media and exploring ideas.

DT: Designing, making, evaluating, technical knowledge, existing products and key individuals and food and nutrition.

At the end of a term, the teacher makes a summary judgement about the work produced using the music, art and DT skills and knowledge sheets which, when completed, indicates the children who have not met, met or exceeded age related expectations for that focus. We use this teacher assessment as a basis for assessing the progress of the child, and we pass this information on to the next teacher at the end of the year.
